The Tools of an Artist
A picture is worth more than a thousand words. This statement, in my opinion, describes the work of my all-time favorite artist, Norman Rockwell. When one looks at these paintings they see more than art, they see a story.
Yet, at the very beginning of each of these masterpieces, there was nothing more than a blank piece of paper, paint, and a few brushes.
The Tools of an Artist
Before a work of art can be created there are many steps and devices that come in to play.
The same is true when it comes to creating a productive lifestyle.
Each week is a blank sheet of paper waiting to hold the colors and shapes of your 24 hour days. The projects you accomplish and the activities you invest your time in are the paints that create the visible outcome of your artwork. While the techniques and schedules that you apply through self-discipline are the brushes that form these strokes of genius.
My Personal tools
Location:
The Great State of Texas
Current gig:
Praxis student and transitioning into a marketing position.
Current mobile device:
iPhone
Current computer:
Apple laptop (yes I am an Apple brat and I will not convert)
One word that best describes how you work:
Intentional
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without?
Blue Letter Bible, Callander and Reminder, All that’s Goggle, Maps (I have no sense of direction), Spotify (I must have my Oldies and Goodies), Word Press, and most recently Grammarly
What’s your workspace like?
Local Tea shop with free Wifi and amazing all-natural energy drinks
What’s your best time-saving trick?
I send a list of daily goals via text to myself the night before as I get into bed. This way I wake up to a message from my past self encouraging me to get up and concur the day.
What’s your favorite to-do list manager?
Honestly, I like the old fashion notebook and written list. I also use my Callander and Reminder apps so that nothing slips through the cracks, but there is just something satisfying about physically marking off a to-do list as I go throughout my day.
Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can’t you live without?
Headphones to focus and block out surrounding sounds, Speakers for the same reason, and books, books, and so many more books.
What everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?
Getting stuff done! Whether it’s a small project or large, I concur the tasks laid before me and I don’t mess around with procrastination.
What are you currently reading?
Pilgrims Progress, Quitter, and my Bible daily.
What do you listen to while you work?
My 50’s and Beyond Spotify playlist.
Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?
I can do both under certain circumstances. If I am in a group of people that are focused on getting a project done and helping each other in an encouraging atmosphere, then that is ideal. However, I am completely capable of tuning out the outside world and working as a one-woman team.
What’s your sleep routine like?
Before I go to bed (always by 10 pm) I check my to-do list for the day to take in my daily accomplishments and then plan out the next day’s list.
As I go to sleep I meditate on scripture or quite myself before my Lord so that I can rest my brain and sleep in peace without dragging anxiety or stress into the following day.
When I wake up (Never after 7), the first thing I do is say good morning to my Savior and ask Him to use me and guide me today. Then get ready with the outfit and accessories that I laid out the night before. After this, I read and have quiet time before I look over my personal text from the night before and my to-do list for the day.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Slow down so that you can go Fast. Being Still and Quiet will allow you to make productive steps forward as opposed to anxious, sporadic dashes that go nowhere.
Additional Tools
For me, the key to a productive day is Attitude
Peace vs. Anxiety. Joy vs. Self-pity. Determination vs. Lackadaisicalness. Etc..
I maintain a positive audited throughout my day by four key tools
- A specific verse or quote that challenges or encourages me. This keeps positive concepts in my mind.
- A specific person or situation I pray for. This one is huge because it takes the focus off of myself and allows me to look outward to others. I can then come back to my current struggle with a clear head.
- A go-to song. When I feel like I might lose it, I force myself to do the opposite of what I naturally want to do and instead smile and sing.
- I choose a daily character trait to work on. Depending on the obstacles that I find myself facing at the time, I will choose a character trait, humility, responsibility, boldness, etc, to focus on for that day. In doing this I improve myself each day, even if everything else completely flops.
Conclusion:
When one looks at a Norman Rockwell work of art, they see more than a painting, they see a story. When someone looks at my life, I hope that they see more than a to-do list and accomplished projects, but instead, a life lived to the fullest, improving the life of myself and others.
The Perfect Cheesecake – My 5 key Ingredients
5 ingredients are all it takes to create a truly irresistible desert. The kind that unlocks a man’s heart by means of his stomach, bringing him to his knees to pop out a ring.
In the same way, there are 5 ingredients that I have mixed in my life to create the perfect Character Cheesecake.
1. Initiative – the Cream Cheese
Initiative is the ability to recognize and do that which needs to be done before it is asked of you.
Just as cream cheese is the base in which all other ingratiates are added to, so initiative is the base by which one can best showcase their skills and abilities.
An individual who can see and accomplish a task before it is assigned will be able to create value in any situation they face.
2. Decisiveness – the Cream
Decisiveness is the ability to finalize difficult decisions based on gained facts and experience.
To get the cream cheese to transform into a creamy delectable substance, cream must be added to the mix. Just so, Decisiveness must be applied to obtain that perfect level of achievement.
Having the capability to come to an intelligent conclusion will enable a person to accomplish a task efficiently without wasting their time or the time of others.
3. Joyfulness – the Sugar
Joyfulness is a personal choice to be happy and enthusiastic regardless of the current circumstance.
Without sugar, a cheesecake tastes downright desisting. In the same way, a productive life without joy will be bitter and distasteful to those who come into contact with it.
As a joyful person, one can create an enjoyable atmosphere which produces greater productivity and less stress among themselves and their coworkers.
4. Compassion – the Flavoring
Compassion is investing in others to have a positive impact on their lives.
The flavoring defines what of cheesecake is known as. Chocolate, Strawberry, or New York Classic. So a person will be known by their commutation for others or lack of.
At the end of one’s life, the projects that they accomplish and the tasks that they completed will not miss them when they’re gone. The people they touched and the relationships that they created will be the things they are measured by in the end.
5. Determination – the Gelatin
Determination is the decision to push through and accomplish one’s goals, regardless of opposition.
The gelatin-like ingredient that holds this character cheesecake together is determination.
Without the determination to see a task through to the end, any dream, goal or desire, is nothing more than an abstract idea.
“You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn
Cream and Cream cheese come from cows. Sugar comes from sugarcane. Gelatin is made form prolonged boiling of skin, cartilage, and bones from animals (yum yum). And flavor comes from fruit or artificial flavorings.
In the same way, each of these character traits is brought about by outside forces, also known as the people one chooses to interact with.
I have 5 particular people who have invested the most in my Character Cheesecake.
1st. My Dad
My Dad has taught me that the power of joy and a positive attitude can empower you to overcome even the darkest times in life.
That time poured into the lives of others is the greatest and most rewarding life investment one can make.
And to push through every barrier in life, because an optical is only an obstacle if one chooses to believe that it is.
2nd. My Sister
Ashtyn has taught me that life is too short to focus solely on what tomorrow may bring, but that one should treasure and invest in the present.
That one must get up even when they get knocked down.
And to trust one’s instincts and intellect as opposed to stewing over the inevitable or unknown.
3rd. My Long Distance Friends
My long-distance relationships have taught me that the title of friend is not enough. That to maintain this connection over distance and time, one must invest time and effort, even when it’s not easy.
And that the value of a person is not measured merely by memories and laughter, but more importantly, by the times when they are simply there for you.
4th. My Mentors
I have been blessed with 2 amazing women who have invested not only their time in listening to my struggles and victories but have also spoken words of wisdom into my life form their own experience.
These women have taught me how to look at my surroundings and make choices that best improve the lives of others and myself.
They have taught me that time is not to be wasted in idleness but is a precious gift meant to impact the world.
And that one person truly can make a difference if they choose to look outside of themselves, to those in need, instead of being self-centered and focused within.
5th. My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ
The relationship I have with my One True Love, Very Best Friend, and Provider of all I’ll ever need, has by far had the greatest impact on my life.
As I grow ever closer to my Lord, He teaches me daily that His plan for my life is to be aware and alert in every situation, that I might be able to be His hands and feet of love to this world.
To move forward regardless of the obstacles, for no giant in my life is too great, that my God is not greater.
And that when I trust in Him I can be immovable against the storms of life, rejoicing even when all darkness surrounds me.
*******
These 5 ingredients and the sources by which I acquire them are what make up my irresistible Character Cheesecake.
The Rental Car life vs. Owning It!
Driving across the state in this Buick rental, makes me miss my Jeep beyond that with words can express. Road trips just aren’t the same without my beloved Gilbert Blithe. Yes, I did name my Jeep after Anne of Green Gables.
There’s just something about driving your own vehicle down the road with the radio blaring and the windows down. It’s a feeling of ownership, control, and the mindset of taking it all in.
The same would apply to life. Especially the life of a Praxis student.
Starting our first official week of Praxis, my fellow student and I have been diving into exactly what this program offers, what we want to achieve, and the expectations that lie before us.
Get Stuff Done!
When I drive my Jeep, I get places. True, the rental will take me for point A to B, but a Jeep takes you places you otherwise wouldn’t go. And believe me, there are few locations on this green earth that Gilbert can’t go.
In the same way, a life that is owned, as opposed to rented, is one that gets places and gets stuff done. You don’t allow roadblocks to get in your way. You blaze your own trails and you accomplish that which lies before you.
If you do it, Document it!
My shades one, oldies and goodies blaring, with the windows down. That’s what memories are made of.
If one were to look through my phone, they would see almost all Jeep selfies. When I go places this my Gil, it suddenly becomes a picture-worthy moment.
As you live an Owning It life, you are constantly doing new and exciting things. Each opportunity is worth documenting and sharing, regardless of how small it may seem. Having a paper trail to look back on is the same as my camera roll. When I show all my friends the crazy places I’ve been and the things I’ve done, it not only reminds me of the things I’ve accomplished, it also makes other people want to come along.
Don’t Waste Anyone’s Time, Especially Your Own!
The one thing I dislike the most about rental cars is the deadline for getting back on time. I absolutely cannot stand the fact that my trip is being controlled by someone else. For example, this trip that I am on has been a race against the clock to get back before 11 pm. Because of this, I not only missed out on great opportunities for selfie and souvenir shops, but it honestly feels as this trip has been altogether a waste. Going places is just as much about the journey as it is the destination.
When you own your life you take advantage of every moment. You won the car, you determine the schedule, you make every minute count. You don’t waste your time or the time of others by not taking every opportunity to invest in this adventure. When someone else is determining your travels arrangements, not only you miss out on all you could have done, but so do the other people who are will you.
Get On The Road, Don’t Wait For A Ride!
Going to get a rental car is simply sad. Instead of being able to just say “let’s go”, jumping in your own vehicle, and hitting the road; you have to instead go down to the car rental and ask someone to give a car.
Owning you Life means that you make things happen, you don’t wait for others to give it to you. You have the power and honestly the responsibility to get yourself where you’re going. Waiting on others to provide these means of transportation is lazy and a complete waste of your life.
Be Thankful
Alright, by this point you may be wondering why I would be driving a rental car instead of my own cherry-red Jeep. (wipe away a tear with a sniffle). Long story short, I let one guy drive my love and as a result, Gilbert spilled his guts all the side of the interstate. I now have a large mechanics bill and a confirmed resolution that no member of the male species will ever drive my Jeep again.
In all honesty, though, Gilbert has been experiencing problems for a while now. Every time I would get in and start him up, I’d say a prayer and continue that prayer until the moment I arrived home safely. It’s amazing how much my prayer life has improved since I bought Gil.
When you own your life, you are far more grateful for those who make it possible for you to get to where you’re going. No one has to stop on the road to help you change a tire or toe to town you when you’re stuck on the side of the road. In the same way, no one in life has to help you reach your goals and dreams. Yet when those certain toe truck angles or life mentors do come along, gratefulness comes naturally.
When you drive a rental though, you expect nothing less than perfect driving condition. You are paying for someone to do something for you, therefore you do not experience appreciation because it’s expected.
Kill the FOMO
The anxiety of getting this rental in on time has added a great amount of stress to this trip. At this moment it is 10:30, we have an hour of driving time to go, and as I said, this thing has to be back by 11. The $100 charge for arriving late has resulted in a fair amount of speeding and far fewer bathroom brakes.
When you rent your life, you will experience FOMO, fear of missing out. In my case, I have a fear of missing out on a big Benjamin. In life though, this fear of all the things you are missing as a result of the trip you are on, the thing you could be doing instead.
Going on a road trip means that I am saying no to everything else I could have been doing back home. However, when you Own your ride, you Own the journey too. You focus on the adventure you’re on instead of the fear of missing out on the meaningless activities that could otherwise be wasting your time.
*******
So turn up your radio, grab your shades, and let the wind blow through your hair. This life is a journey, so own it, don’t rent it.
A huge shoutout to Amanda Kingsmith, and Sara Morrison, for a great first week of Praxis.
Base Running – My Top 3 skills
In my opinion, Baseball is hands down the best sport to ever be played. Not simply because of the physical aspects but more importunely because of the life example that it is.
I’ve heard it said before that baseball is a 10% physical game and a 90% mental game. Just like the batter who’s up to plate, in life we have to be ready for every pitch thrown our way. Baseball, like life, is all about making the next play.
The batter is up to plate, an opportunity is thrown his way and he takes it, sending the it high in the air, over the shortstop’s head. Once that ball hits the green turf, the runner’s goal is to get back home in order to score. The way by which this player accomplishes this victory is by means of three bases and the ability to maneuver them affectively.
We each have our own skills and talents which we use to achieve our goals in this life. You could look at these skills bases. One’s ability to showcase and use these bases efficiently will determine their score on the board by the end of the game.
For myself, I have three main bases that I have acquired over time and am continuing to perfect during each inning in this game we call life.
Base 1. Communication
The ability to express one’s self in a clear and effective way is a skill that can truly change the world. If one can clearly communicate an idea in a way that others can understand and relate to, then they then can have the ability to influence that person’s thoughts. Words can change a person’s opinion, which then can change their actions, which then can change the world.
An example of how I have used this particular skill would be the many opportunities that I have had to speak with my national speech and debate team. At one particular event, I was speaking on the effects of addiction on the human brain and how one can overcome this neurological encagment. On many occasions I would have people form my audience speak to me afterwards on how my research had changed their views on addiction. One such conversation was with a gentleman who had personally struggled with an addiction for many years. He thanked me for my presentation because it gave him hope that he could overcome this obstacle, which had before seemed to be an unmovable mountain.
Many of these people went form believe their own situation, or the situation of a loved one, was beyond hope. After a single speech though, nothing more than mere words, they suddenly had hope and the courage to try.
Another example of this would be the many opportunities that I have had to share my faith at church functions and youth camps. From speaking to a large groups of young campers, to quoting the sermon on the mount at a youth group lock in, I have been the able to not only share the good news of the gospel in a clear and understandable way, but also to take the time to listen to questions and give specific answers. One important key to communication is the ability to listen and effectively respond.
Base 2. Leadership
Bringing direction, organization and a vision to a group of people is what leadership is all about. It’s not about who is on top but instead is a position of serving others. As a leader one must constantly be aware of the needs of those who are looking to them for guidance, and must realize that others are counting on them to provide a level of security. Leadership is a privilege earned though responsibility.
An example of this skill in my own life would be my most previous job. For the last two years I have been working as a USA certified Gymnastics coach with all ages and levels of athletes. This last year I was given my own class of beginning students. This was my first experience teaching on my own and it required a large learning curve on my part. I suddenly went form being responsible for an hour and a half long class, to being in charge of organizing the entire class schedule, work-out plan, individual learning paces, and tournament entries. There were many times I honestly didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew that it was my job to figure it out and bring security to my students and their parents. A leader cannot simply back down when they face a new unknown. They must rise above the obstacles and then help others to do the same. Being a leader is the action of living for others instead of oneself.
Another situation where I exercised this skill would be during my grade school extra curricular activities. From 4-H, sports, and debate, I was given no shortage of opportunities to lead. Though I may not of held the official title of leader in each of these activities (though in many I did), the ability to take on responsibility and guid others was still available. Being a leader doesn’t require a title. It requires an audited and a mindset. In ever situation in life there is an opportunity to lead by example. In each of these activities I would find younger participants who were going through many of the same obstacles I had overcome. By offering a helping hand or being an example of moral character, I was preforming the duties of a leader regardless of my actual position.
Base 3. Creativity
When one hears the word creativity they most likely think of a form of art such as painting, where the artist uses their creativity to create a masterpieces. Though this is true, it by no means applies solely to the arts. Creativity is the ability to take a form of chaos and bring about order in a unique and captivation way.
I find great pride in discovering new and more effective ways of accomplishing tasks.
An example of this would agin be my past experience as a gymnastics coach. In each new obstacle that I faced the ability to look at the situation and creatively find a way by which to solve my dilemma was a life saving skill. One particular situation involved teaching a student a skill that I had never taught before. I knew the fundamentals of how the skill worked, but I myself had never actually taught someone else how to preform this actions themselves. For many weeks I would spend hours watching other coaches who taught higher levels than myself. I also thought of analogies and examples that I could use to explain exactly what the skill would feel like, and which areas of their body would need to move in certain ways. The final thing I did was break down the complicated movement into simple movements that made up the whole action. As an end result, I was able to teach this skill, and many more advanced skills, to my students throughout the competitive season. At the end of that year, my class had progressed from its beginning level, to advanced, with each student placing in the top ten at the Sate level, in every event.
Regardless of the opportunity that life pitches my way, be it a job position, a life changing decision, or simply an every day task, these three bases are the way by which I reach my goals and slide into home.
Would you be pronounced Dead?
One of my favorite movies growing up, was the classic, Snow White.
I would often wonder to myself as I watched this beloved film, what I would have done in the dwarfs’ position. I mean her they were with this girl who appears to be undoubtedly dead. Without the convenience of modern-day technology to measure heartbeats and brain waves, the little men were faced with what seemed to be a crime scene that would stump even inspector Gibs.
This thought kind of freaked me out as a kid because the question would often occur to me; what if they had buried Snow White, alive?
It was at this young age, as I pondered this scenario, that I came to a few conclusions. If I were ever faced with a situation in which I would have to pronounce someone dead, I would do a few thorough tests.
Are they breathing, are they moving, are they responsive? And if there happened to be a good-looking guy around, I might add in a smooch just to be safe.
As funny as this may sound, as I have grown, I have taken those test and applied them to how I look at Christianity.
In James chapter 2 verse 17 we are told that faith without works is dead. Now, this is a very controversial verse among many Christians who argue over faith being by works. Yet if you read the following verse we see that the apostle Paul states that he shows his faith by his works and not that his faith is a result of his works. Allow me to explain.
Imagine that my childhood fear has come to pass. I am now standing over the apparently lifeless body of Snow White. It is my job to determine if she is dead or alive.
So I run through my list of the test. Is she breathing, is she moving, is she responsive? Since no good-looking guys are in the vicinity I resort to my three first questions to best determine my verdict.
Now since the movie portrays that the princess is in a very deep sleep and does not appear to be drawing in any breaths of air, we are going assume that it is unapparent that she is not breathing.
Also, it is clear that she is not doing much moving, though it would have been quite funny if Snow White had walked in her sleep.
The last test is whether she is responsive which also seems to point to the inevitable since she has 7 crying men staring at her for a long period of time. Let’s be honest, if you were fake sleeping, wouldn’t the sobs of dear Dopy bring you out of your daze?
Now we all know that Snow White is not dead, but it would appear that she is, because she is not showing any signs of life. Let me repeat that. She is not showing any signs of life.
The signs of breathing, moving, and responding to sobbing little men, do not make someone alive or dead, but they are clear signs that one would appear to be not living. In the same way, good works do not make faith, yet faith without good works would appear to be dead.
If you crate the appearance of spiritual life by performing good works, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have faith.
Grumpy could have gone up to Snow White’s casket and breathed on the glass, causing it to fog up, and thus created the appearance that the princess was truly breathing. Doc could have tied a string onto her toe, then pulled it from the other side of the room to cause the appearance of movement. And sneezy could have caused a commotion, in the way he does best, and claimed that it was the slumbering damsel. None of these attempts though would have been actual signs of life.
If we are to claim that we are living the Christian life then we should be showing signs of that life. Faith is not a feeling but an action.
In conclusion, I’d rather be known as breathing, moving, responsive Christian than a sleeping Snow White. The question is, does your Christianity show evidence of life, or would you be pronounced dead?
The Never Ending Story
I remember as a child going on an extremely long road trip with my family. I can’t even remember where we went or what we did, but one thing that I’ll never forget is the audiobook we listened to the entire trip. It literally felt like a Never Ending Story.
What intrigued me about this book is that every time you thought it was drawing to an end, the author would throw in a completely new twist, changing up the storyline, and make you the reader more involved. If you have never been privileged, or tortured with this confusing saga, allow me to explain.
The story starts with a boy who is reading a book about a make-believe world. Then when you think the story is coming to an end, the boy realizes that he is the key character that the entire plotline has been leading up to.
With this new insight, the boy has a choice as to whether he will become apart of the book or not. Now, of course, the boy chooses to jump into this mysterious adventure, (and who wouldn’t?), and thus becomes an outside force that is looking in, have bits of input from time to time.
Then a drastic change occurs. The boy suddenly finds himself no longer looking in from the outside, but is now transported into the book itself and is living out the plotline as the main character bringing about the will of the author.
For someone who loves getting to the end of a book just as much as actually reading it, this Never Ending Story nearly drove me crazy. Though I will probably never listen to this book again, there is another story that plays off the same technics, that I recommend everyone should read.
This particular book starts as the overview history of a world and the interaction of its Creator in and through it.
Just as the little boy in the Never Ending Story, when one reads this book it would appear to be nothing more than a fairy tale or perhaps if you believe it, a history lesson. Then it changes. If one will take the teachings of this book as truth, then they suddenly realize that the entire storyline is leading up to they themselves.
With this insight, the reader is faced with a choice. Will they accept this role and the opportunity to become apart of this amazing adventure (again, who wouldn’t?), or will they put the book down and go on their way as if nothing ever happened?
For those who do choose to embrace this new reality, they find that the more they dive into these teachings, the more they are living out the story. Yes, the plotline leads specifically to them, but at the same time, it leads to all who will believe in the writings therein.
With this transformation, the reader now becomes a key player living out not only the story and the power it holds but also becomes the very feet by which this tale makes its way into the hands of others who will read and perhaps believe.
Now I’m sure that I have intrigued you all to the point that you are now anticipating the moment that I will reveal the title of this book so you can go and buy it on Amazon. Are you ready? Drum roll, please…
It’s the gospel. Or more well known as, the Bible.
When one first reads through the Bible it would appear to be nothing more than a history book that in many cases makes little to no sense. However, the parts that are necessary for one to see truth are made undeniably clear. For example, the fact that all have sinned and have come short of the glory of God, which points to our need of a Savior. Or the fact that Jesus Christ is God and He came down to this earth, lived a perfect life and died for you and me so that we could be saved from the penalty of sin.
It is here that the reader is faced with a choice. Will they believe in these teaching and take this free gift of grace and atonement, or will the pass the entire thing off as folklore and continue with life as they know it.
For those who chose to believe, they are then able to read through this book, placing themselves in the stories to see that the end goal of the book truly was to reach them. The very reason the history is there is to point to the One who came to save them.
Yet this is only the beginning. You see, as one begins to look at Scripture through the lenses of seeing Jesus Christ and His work which He wills to do in all who believe, then it begins to change your lives.
This other world, the spiritual realm you could say, actually becomes your new reality, so that instead of looking in on it form your earthly perspective, you now look at the earthy realm form a spiritual perspective.
There is one last twist though that makes this book come to life at an even more gangue scale, in and through the reader.
As this book takes over and transforms you into a mighty warrior hero, you are given a mission to accomplish. Just as every good story, the heroes must overcome unspeakable odds, conquer a terrifying beast, and rescue those who are held captive by the evil forces.
The reader goes form being the one who believed, to being one of many who are bringing this book of truth to others who will also read and believe.
I have read through this book quite a few times and intend to read through it many more times throughout my lifetime. Yet no matter how many times I dig into these pages, I leave with newfound truth and deeper understanding that changes my life.
You see, this is so much more than a good story or even a guide to how to live a “good Christian Life”. It is the living word of God that if you will allow it to, will change your life forever.
I suppose you could call it The Forever-Living Story.
Don’t Believe What I Say
If you have read any of my prevues blog posts, I hope that it has been made clear to you that I at lest proclaim to be a Christian.
Regardless of whether you as the reader agree with this beliefs system, it is the one to which I hold. With that said, I also desire to crate and atmosphere in which all groups of people can come together and express their options of life and truth.
My personal belief is that Jesus Christ is the answer to both life and is the ultimate truth, but I would love to also hear your options and have the opportunity to see life from your views.
The reason I am expressing this stance is to explain why I will be changing the course of this blog channel, focusing more on a track of ideas as posed to my previous random topics.
You see, I have recently returned from an intense teaching program that has opened my eyes to a whole new level of rich and in-depth truth, and I desire to share this newfound treasure with you.
With that said, I understand that you may not agree with what I write, and that is perfectly fine. In fact, I hope that you don’t. The last thing I would ever want is to have my readers agree wholeheartedly with everything I say.
I did not create this blog so that I could become some Know-It-All with a following of brainwashed minions. I created this blog to provide a community for those who seek to learn.
As my reader, I have one request for you. Please, pretty please with a great big cherry on top, DO NOT take what I saw and agree with it.
Challenge it, and challenge me. I would love to hear your opinions and arguments against what I write. I’m here to learn as well, so please shear with me.
Also, please come to this blog with an open mind. I hope that others can learn to form the truths that I have discovered. So use your brain, challenge my ideas, but also be open to what I have to say because I say it in complete a total love from the very depths of my heart.
With that said, I’d like to take the remainder of this post and briefly explain what I will be sharing over the next few months, and why I am choosing to do so.
As I said, I have recently returned from an intense training that has radically transformed many of the ways I look at the world.
This school is called Ellerslie, and many of you should be a failure with it since I’ve referenced it in quite a few of my previous post. In case you haven’t looked into this outstanding program though, the short is that it is a mission training/bible study school that equips and trains disciples in the faith.
I spent a total of 5 weeks in Windsor Colorado at the Ellerslie campus and am continuing my training for a following 13 week via online courses. Over the next few months, I will be going back through each of the lessons taught during these classes and putting them into my own words.
I am doing this for two reasons.
1)to study out and determine truth for myself because as I have expressed to you my reader, I am strongly against people taking the options of others without first studying it out for themselves.
2) Gaining knowledge and understanding, especially when it is as rich as the teachings found in God’s world, are not meant to remain trapped in the minds of a single person. I would be utterly selfish and cold-hearted if I kept these remarkable treasures to myself. Thus, I share them with you to do with as you see fit.
To conclude, I wish to give you just a sneak peek into the amazing adventure that lays before us by summarizing a few key foundations.
1.Our position in Christ. Understanding the significants of being crucified, buried, and risen to a new life in Christ enables me to live a life of complete victory over sin. Not because it is I who can accomplish such a feat, but because of the One who is living in and through me.
2. A saturated obsession with Jesus Christ and His word. Embracing a true and meaningful relationship with my One True Love and very Best Friend by drawing near to Him in both prayer and the seeking out of his word.
3. Being immovable and rejoicing during trials and tribulations because of my faith in Jesus Christ my Lord.
If none of that makes sense, don’t worry. Just let it spark your curiosity and inspire you to read the following post. I promise, they’ll be worth it.
Best of Both Worlds
As a middle- school girl, I remember jumping on the couch and turning on the Disney channel to watch the Hannah Montanan show. What captivated me about this show was the idea that a girl, in many ways much like myself, could have a second form of identity as a supper star.
The “Best of Both Worlds” idea is that someone could live a normal life yet also be idolized and seen by so many.
What if you could actually have a life where being yourself was what made you famous, or at least recognized? What would you do with this popularity and recognition? How would being in the spotlight change the way you live?
The answers to these questions doesn’t lie in a wig or secret identity, but instead in something far more empowering; your Personal Brand.
A Personal Brand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s how you go about branding, or presenting yourself to the world. The catch here is that in order to brand yourself you must share openly with the world who you are.
To some this may seem a bit frightening, after all, Miley Cyrus was able to hide her life behind her blond hair and bright lights. In the real world though, people don’t want to see a fake performance. They want to see real people who they can relate to. By being exactly who you are, you can provide for them someone to follow, and all it takes is three key ingredients.
- First, Ditch the Wig
Despite the title being Hannah Montana, the majority of the show consisted of Miley Cyrus juggling the life of a teenage girl who also had to deal with being a pop star. Like I said, people want to follow real people who make them strive to be better themselves. If the show had been all about Hannah Montana then only celebrities could relate to it. Because it was from the view point of a simple young girl though, the majority of the world could then relate.
If you want to crate a successful Personal Brand then you must present yourself in a way that others can relate to. If they wanted to follow a Brand then they’d follow a political campaign, fashion company, or actual celebrity who pays other people to run their social media. People trust a face more than they do a logo. So ditch the wig and live your life in a way that inspires others to strive to be better.
- Second, Sing to Your Own Tune
Whether it was with her family, her friends, or her boy drama, Miley always had a unique way of handling her problems. She never sang her life song to anyone else’s tune. Though she went through the same life experiences as everyday people, she did it in her own way.
When you are crating your personal band, you must be interesting. The key to getting people to notice you is by doing things different than everyone else. Accomplishments + Uniqueness + Expression = Interesting. If you take the tasks that you accomplish on a daily bases, add your own personal flair, and then showcase it in a way that expresses who you are, you will then have something that people actually want to see.
- Third, Use Your Spotlight
Every time Hannah Montana or Miley Cyrus used their voice to sing, people listened. They listened because they were intrigued and in so being they gave their full attention to the words this girl had to say; regardless of how annoying the songs tended to be.
The best artist are those who write songs that share their own experiences and life lessons. Wether you choose to express yourself through music, writing, videos, or so on, you are crating a platform on which you get to share with the world what you have done and learned. Never shy away form this spotlight. Embrace it. Show who you are and take this opportunity to impacted the lives of others.
In the end, having your own Personal Brand is nothing more than sharing your life with the world. If you choose to be yourself and no one else, live life in your own way, and share your gifts, then you truly can have the Best of Both Worlds.

If A Man Answers….. don’t hang up
In the movie, If a Man Answers, Sandra Dee devises a plan where her mother calls her house every night and just when her husband answers she hangs up immediately. This, along with the long stem roses that Sandra sends to herself, results in her husband becoming mad with envy and thus gives his undivided attention to his little wife whom he fears of losing.
Though I myself have never put this genius idea into action, I have received many phone calls that I have hung up on immediately or have been hung up on myself.
When people refer to “Cold Calls”, they are usually talking about auto insurance companies or political campaigners. Though this is the business mindset of the term, in my view, Cold Calls are a skill set that is required for nearly every area of life, especially when it comes to getting a date.
Picture yourself, you punch your crush’s number into your phone and wait. It rings, and it rings again, and it rings again. Finally you hear a voice on the other end of the line and realize that you have no idea what to say, so you hang up immediately. As you kick yourself for being such a chicken, your crush is lost as to what just happened and is now blocking your number.
Whether or not you have been in such a position before or not, we can all relate to the fear of having to call someone. How stupid we feel as we hope and pray that it goes to voicemail so we can leave a message at auctioneer speed and hang up.
I have good news for you. Just as the witty Sandra Dee, you too can harness the power of Cold Calls to bring about your desired reaction from that individual on the other end one the line.
Step 1: Cool your nerves.
Having a cool head on your shoulders is key when making a call to anyone. After all, they had no plans of talking to you and therefore will see no reason to take time out of their busy schedule unless you assure them that it is worth their while?
So next time your hands start to sweat, you get the chills, your tongue swells, and you lose all ability to speak, you can try these tricks to calm your nerves.
- Take a deep breath for 6 seconds, hold it for 2, then let it out for 7.
- Powere pose. To do this, reach your arms out to your side and lean your head back. Doing this for 30 seconds will greatly reduce your stress and may even make everyone around you laugh. Win win.
- Chew gum. By chewing gum you can relax your mind by making it think you are eating and that there is nothing to fear.
Beyond these physical actions, there are a few mental techniques you can use as well.
- Remember that you are equal to the person you are calling. This is not you coming to them on bended knee begging for their approval. This is simply a conversation between two human beings who both require air to breath and coffee to make it through the day.
- Believe in what you are calling about. If you are passionate about your topic then let that passion lead.
- Don’t make it a bigger deal than it actually is. I mean what’s the worst thing that could happen? She could turn you down, the whole school could find out, and below your picture in the year book the words “He’s was a flop with chicks” could be your insignia. Come on.
Step 2. The actual call
There are two main points you need to cover in your Cold Call. First, who you are, and second, why they should care.
The best way to go about introducing yourself is by making it clear that you are not a complete stranger. This can be accomplished by stating that you both have a mutual acquaintance, you’ve gone to the same events, share the same interest, or even that you have met briefly in person.
Now you need to convince them that you have something worth listening to. This should honestly take less than 30 seconds and should get strait to the point.
- What exactly is your product, service, or concept that you are promoting? Simply, tell them why you are calling.
- Explain to them the benefits of your product. Show them how you can solve a problem or a pain in their life.
- Finally, ask them what they think and listen.
Let’s say that you were calling this girl that you would like to ask out. If you were to use these steps it would go something like this –
“Hey Sally, this is James. You know the guy who keeps looking over at you during math class. Ya that’s me. So I heard you talking about wanting to go to that movie and thought I might help you out by buying you a ticket, maybe some popcorn, and who knows, I could even proved a shoulder for you to cry on when it gets to the sad parts. What you think?”
Bingo
Step 3. Get the date (or in the business world, the meeting)
So now that you’ve won over your targeted customer with your charm, charisma, and a bit of humor, its time to seal the deal.
There is one very important key here. You are not asking the girl to marry you! Or in the business world, you’re not selling the product here and now. You are simply getting that person to give you the opportunity to speak with them further on this topic in person at a later date. Don’t try to sell yourself or your product over this one phone call. Simply spark interest which will make them even more interested in your product when you finally sit down with them face to face.
With that clear, your last step it to set the date. This is key, repeat that date to them. Just before you hang up say, “alright then, I’ll pick you up this Saturday at 6:00.” By restating this at the very end, it shows that you will not forget and how important this is to you while also cementing it into their mind and expressing how important it should be to them.
And that is how you get a date.
So there you have it. The next time you make a Cold Call, If a Man Answers….. you won’t have to hang up.
